We are a nonprofit Buddhist charity committed to providing meditation classes that support inner peace and well-being. We’re located in the heart of Chorlton.
Everybody is welcome!
Modern Buddhism offers practical inner solutions to everyday problems of modern life. It is perfectly suited to busy lives whether at work, at home, in education or during periods of ill health or unemployment.
With basic essential instructions everyone can learn to calm their minds, find some mental peace and deal with the stresses and tension of modern life. We can build inner confidence and grow our own good qualities.
Our in-depth study programmes offer an opportunity to deepen and stabilise our meditation experience. Weekly classes consist of a unique blend of explanation, meditation and discussion. We gain a special familiarity with key Buddhist ideas and practice.
Retreats are an opportunity to let go of all our daily concerns and worries and allow ourselves to go deeper into a peaceful inner world. Retreats range from half day mini mind-breaks to sessions spread out over several days.
Chanted Prayers are meditations set to melodies which we can chant or just listen to. They are an occasion to come together and experience our collective desire for peace, wisdom and compassion in ourselves and in the world.

Meditation is a mind that is single-pointedly focused on a virtuous object, and whose function is to make the mind peaceful and calm. Whenever we meditate, we are performing a mental action that will cause us to experience inner peace in the future.
The purpose
The purpose of meditation is to cultivate positive mental states and overcome negative habits. Through meditation we learn that happiness is a state of mind and that the real source of happiness lies within, not in external situations. When our mind is peaceful we are free from worries and mental discomfort, and we experience true happiness. Meditation is the method to make our mind peaceful and can be practiced by anyone..

Meditation helps to:
Experience a calm mind & reduce mental tension and anxiety
Improve your sense of well-being & experience real happiness
Develop a positive outlook and caring attitude to others.
Step 1 – Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight and relaxed. Rest your hands in your lap, partially close your eyes and let all your stress and tension fall away.
Step 1 – Turn your attention inwards and become aware of your breathing. Don’t try to control your breathing – just follow the inhalation and exhalation of your breath.
Step 3 – Gradually become aware of the sensation of the breath as it enters and leaves the nostrils. Focus on the sensation of the breath and try to forget about everything else.
Step 4 – Remain focused on the sensation of the breath. If your mind wanders away from the breath, immediately let go of the distraction and come back to the breath.
Step 5 – Gradually your distracting thoughts will subside and you will begin to experience inner peace and relaxation. Stay with this feeling of mental calm for a while.
Step 6 – When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and our mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment naturally arises from within. Enjoy!
As with any skill, the more consistently we practice, the better we become. Making meditation part of our daily routine is the key to making progress. By initially setting aside just ten minutes each day, you can gradually develop the skills you need to generate a peaceful mind and experience happiness from within.
Once we have become familiar with settling our mind, we are ready to practice contemplative meditation, which focuses on “an object of meditation” such as love, compassion or gratitude.
These are some of our activities that will help you start with meditation. You can book beforehand or just drop-in. Meditation can be useful regardless of any faith. Everyone is welcome.

The New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) is an international Buddhist community founded in 1991 by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. The NKT is recognized as an independent Buddhist tradition, devoid of political affiliations, and functions under the legal status of a non-profit, charitable organization in England, known as the International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU). This organization is committed to preserving and sharing the profound teachings of Kadampa Buddhism through its diverse network of centers and community initiatives.
Dharma Centers are places where people study and practice Buddha’s teachings together. They provide opportunities for study programs, meditation sessions, observing moral discipline, and participating in group prayers and pujas like the daily Heart Jewel practice or regular Tara Pujas. There are 1400 such centers and branches globally.
Through practising the instructions presented in this book we can transform our life from a state of misery into one of pure and everlasting happiness. These instructions are scientific methods to improve our human nature.
Modern Buddhism is perfectly suited for inspiring those seeking solutions within Buddhism to problems of everyday life, as well as for encouraging practitioners of all faiths to deepen their understanding and practice of the spiritual path.
